[Q4+5]

The production of our video is a low budget independent film. The way the film is distributed will vary according to if it is a independent or mainstream blockbuster. The ways in which independent films get disturbuted are often through internet methods. These methods could include using websites such as twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, BBC film network, blogs etc.

A few websites which are specifically geared towards distributing independent films are the websites YouTube, Vimeo and the BBC film network. YouTube can attract a wide audience whilst a site such as Vimeo will attract a more niche audience.

This thriller film opening has been made by students and has received a lot of views.  It has received over 2000 views and has some comments and ratings.

Our film will get distributed in a number of ways, the film will get cinematic screening and screenings amongst family/friends. Our film can also get distributed on the internet on a website like Vimeo where professional film-makers may comment. Our film will also get a 200 DVD release. We could also distribute the film through independent film festivals where if good could gain considerable attention.

Q4 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Q5 - How will you attract/address your audience?

A couple of things we have to think about distribution and marketing of our movie is that its a low budget movie and made by an independent low budget production company. It has a shared cinematic with other students and a DVD release of 200 copies we also had to think in what ways we can use the internet to distribute and market our movie.

Ways to get our movie to the audience:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Youtube
  • Vimeo
  • Independent Film Festivals
  • Leaflets
  • Review in a local newspaper
  • Our Blogs
  • Roll Over advert on CandI website
  • Film Networks

We looked at three netwrok sites where we could distribute our movie to attract the audience. These include the BBC FILM NETWORK where amateur filmmakers can distribute their films, VIMEO which is mainly used by film makers, producers and students, and finally hugely popular YouTube where everyone can upload anything and attract a wide audience.

TASK 1.

The BBC Film Network give young film makers  the opportunity to showcase their movies and helps them to get the movie out to the audience and the market.

I have found a short thriller film on the Film Network, called Playground by Mark Kuczewski. Its a short thriller about a man who picks up a young female hitch hiker. As they travel we find out more about the man's past , what his intentions are and how will the film end.

Films on the BBC film network are categorised depending on the genre, duration , title , region its from, or date added. This way the film can find its target audience. The are six main film categories : Drama, Documentary, Comedy, Music , Animation and Artist's moving images.

TASK 2.

Vimeo is a video showing site for film makers, producers and students who are passionate about sharing the videos they make . The way it is constructed is different to you tube as not everyone can upload any video. Videos placed on Vimeo find their audience in a different way once a video gets a certain number of likes it is put on the main page being exposed to a larger number of audience and most likely to find its target audience.

White Red Panic (HD) from Ayz Waraich on Vimeo.

This is a short thriller called ' White Red Panic' Its about two guys mixed up in the wrong side of life, and the toll it takes on their character and soul.

I found the film by typing the key word 'thriller' in the search videos box. This way people can type in a key word and videos related to that word can be displayed to the audience.
On Vimeo the users can look through channels and find or showcase films or share their videos with communities helping their or others movies find their target audience.

TASK 3.

The final clip is from hugely popular Youtube. Videos uploaded here reach a wide audience all over the world, this way they can attract any type of audience ,many videos are show on the side bar with similar or recommended videos to the one someone is watching.Users can post comments and rate the videos.

This is a short thriller film I found made by As Students from another school.
The school has its own YouTube channel where all the films made by the students are uploaded. this way the public can view them comment, and rate. On the side there is a suggestions bar which show similar videos or more videos from this channel this way someone can look through these videos. This also helps other videos find their target audience.

To promote our film and help its find its target audience we uploaded our film on Facebook where our friends can view it and comment. Also our film was shown in a cinema in front of other media AS students and the film will get a DVD release of 200 copies with other AS media films. Our movie is also uploaded on Blogger therefore the public can also find it for example by typing a hey word like 'demented' into Google search.

Question 4 and 5

How you address and attract your audience? Our film is a small budget, independent film. So our distribution money is limited. However now there are a lot of ways using the internet to promote the movie without spending a lot. Our clip is viewed on Vimeo embedded onto our blogs right now and it can be uploaded onto youtube to gain more viewer's- where independent films  The three effective ways to promote our clip is using:
  • Vimeo: Film sharing website, the way it's constructed is different: semi professional.
  • Youtube: Used by a mainstream audience, wider range of audience.
  • BBC film network- allows younger people the chance to get their clips get noticed.
If you look at youtube you can see a clip of a low budget film, for example Drip:
Drip has had 1,171 views and comments, which allows the audience to get there review across if whether they liked the movie or not.

Examples of the review:
  • Yes, I agree, for such a low budgeted film I thought it came of quite authentic.4 stars.
  • I love the part with the blood dripping from her hand, great job!

    [Q1] Challenging forms and conventions

    Demented (our film) opening sequence
    What Lies Beneath opening sequence

For our opening, we have taken aspects of "What Lies Beneath's" opening. We have used a similar background texture and have opted for titles over screen just like which is seen in "What Lies Beneath". The font is similar and is white. Like in "What Lies Beneath", we ordered the credits to have the production company and then the studio.

    [Q3] Audiences

Our film Demented is centred around a female character, it involves psychotic behaviour due to the protagonists issues with babies. Due to the storyline of our film, I would think our film would be bested aimed at women. This film is also best aimed at women as thriller films are statistically watched more by women.

A scenario which could be used to detail who our target audience will be:
Zoe is a 20 year old university student. She studies Art and her hobbies include socialising with friends and going to music festivals where relatively unknown and aspiring musicians perform.  Zoe loves being original in clothing and often opts for vintage clothing from shops such as American Apparel and vintage stalls . Zoe and her friends are interested in music from independent artists and often watch independent films rather than
    blockbuster.

    The contents of Zoe's handbag:
    Glasses
    Sketchbook

    Make up
    Hair spray
    Photography camera
    iPhone 4

    Q3. Target Audience

Demented is a psychological thriller with buts from Supernatural or Espionage thriller therefore it can attract a wider audience.

A person that would come and see our movie would be a 25 year old woman called Latasha, who works part time in a Art Shop and studies Fine Art at University. She enjoys night outs with her friends and her favourite is a night out to see a brilliant movie. She enjoys a variety of genres but her favourite are psychological thrillers. She can come and watch Demented as its has a mixture of different sub genres which can suit her and her friend an they can all enjoy it.Jenny aspires to be a make-up artist therefore in her bag we can find lots of different make up accessories. She also reads lots of fashion magazines where she can also read the latest reviews for new cinema releases.

    Q1. Forms and Conventions

I have looked at 9 shots from the title sequence from 'What Lies Beneath' which we used for our titles sequence as inspiration and at 9 from our final title sequence and I have compared them.

Both title sequences used an ident for the st shot. In the opening titles for 'What Lies Beneath' the ident of 20th century fox is followed by Image Movers a digital film studio. In our film the CandI ident is followed by Group 2 Films which appears over our Mercury liquid background. In 'What Lies Beneath' the two production companies names are then followed by 20t century fox and dreamworks pictures which is the first title to appear over the water effect background .In our film we also put the production companies 'Group 2 Films' and 'Timeless Productions'  over the Mercury liquid background. In shot 6 we mentioned the name of the film 'Demented' , in the film 'What Lies Beneath' the Image movers company appeared again but this time over the films water effect background. After we introduced the films name , we introduced the main character (shot 8) in a short clip 'flashback' where the character is looking at a baby scan picture . In 'What Lies Beneath' the watery effect appears throughout the title sequence and there are pauses between each title. After a pause on shot 7, the films name appears (shot 8) followed by introducing the character in shot 9.

Overall in our thriller film we tried to use the inspiration from 'What Lies Beneath' in our title sequence .We found a background effect which resembles the one used in 'What Lies Beneath'.We also followed te order of titles appearing on the credits. We introduced the important companies first then followed with the main characters name and finished with the directors.

    Q3-Target audience for media product

How you address and attract your audience? Our film is a small budget, independent film. So our distribution money is limited. However now there are a lot of ways using the internet to promote the movie without spending a lot. Demented being a psychological and a little bit of supernatural thriller; is set to attract a specific audience. One I had in mind is a person like Jack. Jack is 21 years old, he is a university student who studies psychology and is interested in the supernatural. In his spare time Jack works in Starbucks and has a girlfriend, who he takes to cinema regularly. In his spare time Jack reads Newspapers, were he tries to see the best movie review. He also is good with technology owning a iphone4- were he goes on internet- youtube and vimeo to see the new film trailers and spoofs of the film.

Ways to get the target audience attention:
    • Posters
    • youtube
    • facebook
    • advertising banners
    • roll over advert- Candi website
    • blogs
    • flyers
    • film festival

    Q2.Representation of social groups

In our film we used the characters image to convey that our character is a hiding a secret. Through the prop of the wig, clothing and make up we were able to change our characters image. Moreover the use of lighting has also been importantly used to symbolise the change in our character agenda, making the lighting suit the characters new evil, disguised agenda.

The opening of Fatal Attraction and Demented is similar symbolically. In the beginning of  Fatal Attraction the role of the women changes from being attacked being represented as the victim to being the attacker, using the knife as a weapon. Similar to Demented the character being plain in the beginning changes to the disguised villain, using her disguise as her weapon.

Q1: In What Ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

The nine title sequence shots that I will be comparing is What lies beneath and our thriller opening Demented. We print screened the shots that were similar from What lies Beneath and Demented, and out it in order using photo shoot.

First the 20th century ident is presented first, similarly to Demented the City and Islington ident appears, which was made by the college, was used to protect the copy right law. After a black screen is conveyed in both. Third came the image movers in What Lies Beneath and the City and Islington logo appeared in Demented. Fourth a blank screen appeared in What Lies Beneath and the Group 2 Films production appeared in Demented. Fifth the actors presented appeared in What Lies Beneath and the Timeless Production appeared in Demented, then for number six the opposite happened. Number seven revealing the title- Demented and just a shot of the water background  in What Lies Beneath- with number eight conveying the title- What Lies Beneath. Number eight in Demented revealed the character disguised and number nine a picture of a baby scan; while in What Lies Beneath a ghosts face appears, just like the baby scan in Demented it is unidentified.
Our film followed a number of conventions shown by some of the film we analysed.

One of these conventions used in our film was to do our credits over a background, with similar liquid like, blue background- which was inspired from What Lies Beneath. The way the title sequence was ordered has also been inspired by What Lies Beneath, structuring it with the ident being conveyed first, then the production, presents, title and image.

Q3:Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product ?

I think the typical audience for "Demented " would be a 20 year old female called Jennie .She is  a  part time sales assistant who attends university where she studies  Drama . She still lives at home with her mum & dad .  Jennie greatly  enjoys socialising  with friends in activities like going out for meals and visiting the cinema. She enjoys a wide range of genres of film  and her favourite actress who she aspires to be as successful as is Angelina jolie   Hobbies of jennies include  shopping  she likes high street brands such as top shop and river island to listening to music her favourite genres are pop & R&B   Jennie is a lover of coffee and  also has interest that  vary from photography  to sports she tries to get to the gym as a often as she can. Jennie is also a fan of technology and had some of the latest gadgets like an ipad & Blackberry .
I think the content of her hand bag would look a little something like this
